Introduction to Performance Excellence - 1 Day

This workshop presents an overview of the Malcolm Baldrige/Washington State Quality Award system and criteria. Become familiar with the criteria purpose, uses, and content. Also, gain a greater understanding of Baldrige core values, concepts, and framework. This workshop is designed for people who have had no previous training about the criteria or who need a quick refresher course. In addition to the general version of the criteria that uses non-specific examples, industry-related versions of the criteria also are offered for public sector organizations, health care and educational institutions.

Baldrige Case Study - 2 Days

(Prerequisite: Introduction to Performance Excellence or prior exposure to Baldrige Criteria)
The Washington State Quality Award Program has created a special version of our standard examiners' training course. This workshop provides an in-depth review of the criteria for performance excellence, including analyzing a case study that simulates an award application. Participants learn how to apply the scoring guidelines, conduct consensus reviews, and prepare written comments. This workshop is designed as a follow-up to the "Introduction to Performance Excellence" course.

This course is based on a case study. Participants are expected to read the case study prior to coming to the class. Typically it will take 4 to 6 hours to complete the reading assignment. Click on the following link to download the case study.

Baldrige Based Self-Assessments - 1 Day

Designed for those with a basic understanding of Baldrige concepts, this workshop covers self-assessment tools and how to apply them within your organization. The session will outline the value of self-assessments and describe the entire process - from leadership commitment to action planning. A number of basic, intermediate, and advanced self-assessment tools will be introduced and you will have the opportunity to use and critique them. You will also receive helpful samples that can be used to customize your own self-assessment program. While this workshop is worthwhile to anyone seeking more knowledge about applying Baldrige, it is most valuable to teams seriously considering or already planning a self-assessment.

Preparing and Applying for the WSQA - 1 Day

(Prerequisite: Introduction to Performance Excellence OR previous Baldrige experience) The Washington State Quality Award criteria are a proven approach to improving customer satisfaction and the effectiveness and efficiency of organizations. This workshop is designed to assist organization that desire to complete an award application. You will receive tips, tools, techniques, samples, and a start to finish processes that will lead to a completed application. At the completion of this workshop you will have a step-by-step method for mobilizing your organization to 1) fully address the criteria requirements, and 2) prepare an award application.

Workshops for Washington State Agencies

Washington State Quality Award is a non-profit program dedicated to providing organizations throughout Washington State the opportunity to learn how the Baldrige criteria can be applied to create a high performing organization. The workshops described below were designed to specifically assist Washington State agencies to prepare to apply for the WSQA as required by HB1970.
All workshops are conducted in an interactive format with questions, discussions, and short exercises. They will be led by WSQA instructors who have many years of both management and Baldrige experience.

 

The following workshops are offered by WSQA to assist state agencies in complying with the requirement to apply for the award by 2008.  The workshops are recommended to those who want to understand what WSQA is, how it can help an agency improve the services it delivers, and what is involved in completing an application.

Executive Overview– 1/2 Day
This workshop presents an overview of the Malcolm Baldrige/Washington State Quality Award system and criteria.  Our goal is for all participants to gain a greater understanding of Baldrige core values, concepts, criteria and framework.  They will also gain a basic understanding of how to use this knowledge to meet the requirements of HB1970.


Target Audience: Washington State Executives and leadership teams.


Cost: $110 per person with a maximum of 50 and minimum of 25 participants per workshop

Baldrige Case Study - Two Days
This workshop provides an in-depth review of the Criteria for Performance Excellence, where participants learn how to use the Criteria to evaluate a case study that simulates an award application.  Day one provides the participants tips, techniques, tools and hands-on practice for evaluation.  Day two is primarily hands-on case evaluation work – covering Items in all of the Criteria Categories.


Participants are expected to read the case study prior to coming to the class. Typically it will take 4 to 6 hours to complete the reading assignment.


Target Audience: Key members of WSQA application preparation teams; individuals who want to know more about the Baldrige concept.


Cost: $275 per person with a maximum of 30 and minimum of 20 participants per workshop

Write Your WSQA Assessment Application

Purpose: An 8 part workshop designed to facilitate agencies in writing their WSQA Applications. Each organization will be guided through drafting their responses to the assessment questions. Participants will be asked to bring agency specific materials/data and then will be provided clarification, examples, and suggestions during the workshop to assist them in drafting their responses. Following each workshop the participants will be able to complete the application for each category.

 

Length: Eight (8) half-day sessions occurring over 8 months.

 

Participants : Individuals responsible for writing a WSQA Assessment Application for their agency

 

Objective : Provide guidance in the preparation and writing of a WSQA Assessment Application.

 

Deliverable : A completed Draft WSQA Assessment Application

 

Participant Expectations: Completion of assignments: 8-12 hours per session. Gathering of information for next session: 2-4 hours/session. Participants must have access to organizational information and leadership input throughout the workshop.

 

Note: The successful completion of the Assessment Application is conditional on the participant completing class assignments, preparing for each session and attending and participating in the sessions. The quality of the application is largely dependant on the effort of the participants and the support of their organization.

 

Facilitators: Certified WSQA trainers, experienced in the preparation and examination of Baldrige applications.

 

First Session- Writing an Organizational Profile

Second Session- Leadership (Category 1)

Third Session- Strategic Planning (Category 2)

Fourth Session- Focusing on the Customer (Category 3)

Fifth Session- Knowledge and Information Management (Category 4)

Sixth Session- Human Resource Focus (Category 5)

Seventh Session- Process Focus (Category 6)

Eight Session- Results (Category 7) and tying it all together

 

Fee : $2400 per organization preparing an application (2 participants), additional participants $800 each

 

Prerequisite:   Introduction to Performance Excellence or Executive Overview. It is recommended that 1 of the organization's participants attend the Baldrige Case Study or participate as a WSQA Examiner.

 

Workshop Size: Minimum of 6 organizations, maximum of 15 organizations

 

When: The first session will be determined once the minimum number of organizations have submitted their letter of commitment. These first 6 organizations will have input into the meeting date and start date.
